Glucosamine and Chondroitin ingredients are NOT all the same!

We all have heard of glucosamine or chondroitin; we all know someone who at least tried a joint supplement that contained these ingredients. But, why is it that some products work better than others? Aren’t the ingredients all the same? The truth is, ingredients such as glucosamine and chondroitin have different quality levels and stabilization techniques and dosages that help shape the final product’s overall effectiveness. According to the Arthritis Foundation, dosing and overall ingredient content can vary a lot between brands, causing some to work more efficiently than others.

Glucosamine Sulfate

To date, many different studies have been done using Glucosamine ingredients. However, not many people know that there are different types of Glucosamine – Glucosamine Sulfate and Glucosamine Hydrochloride, and even different types of stabilizations. All seem similar but are in fact very different. Studies on Glucosamine have used both ingredients with different stabilizations at different quality levels, causing inconsistent results and some failed studies. Nevertheless, the more positive and clinically relevant studies have shown that high quality (pharmaceutical/USP grade) Glucosamine Sulfate at 1,500 mg dosage is more effective in supporting joint health. Furthermore, the positive studies using Glucosamine Sulfate were done using the sodium chloride stabilization. However, the potassium chloride stabilization also used for Glucosamine Sulfates, have also been found to work just as well. This is why in our InvigoFlex brand we offer two Glucosamine sulfates, one using the Classic stabilization method of sodium chloride and a Glucosamine Sulfate that uses a potassium stabilization in order to offer customers a sodium free, shellfish free and vegetarian safe alternative.

• InvigoFlex® D – contains 1500 mg of Glucosamine Sulfate, the CLASSIC formulation, stabilized in the sodium chloride method. InvigoFlex® D is used to help support joint health and maintain and promote healthy cartilage. It is also available in both a powder form and in caplets to give customers more delivery options.

• InvigoFlex® GS – is a Glucosamine Sulfate that is shellfish free, sodium free, and vegetarian safe. InvigoFlex® GS is also used to help support joint health and maintain and promote healthy cartilage but provides alternatives to customers who are allergic to shellfish and/or want to limit their sodium intake. In addition to Glucosamine Sulfate, we have added Boswellia Serrata to help manage inflammation in the joints.

Chondroitin Sulfate

In addition to Glucosamine Sulfate studies, Chondroitin Sulfate has been studied in over 20 different clinical trials as a standalone ingredient to provide joint relief. Chondroitin is different than Glucosamine in the sense that it provides additional support to cartilage by cushioning the joints. It is no wonder why both ingredients are usually combined within the same supplement. However, each as a standalone offer joint health benefits and are recommended by some physicians to take separately. Chondroitin Sulfate and Glucosamine Sulfate are different, but they both aim to achieve the same results; supporting overall joint health. Chondroitin Sulfate as a stand-alone product (without Glucosamine) is recommended in Europe as a baseline treatment for joint relief in both the knees and hands. Recommended dosage ranges from 800 mg to 1200 mg. There are over 20 studies done on Chondroitin Sulfate alone with the majority using the 1200 mg dosage.

In addition to Chondroitin Sulfate, we have added Curcumin which is a Turmeric extract to help manage inflammation in the joints.

Glucosamine & Chondroitin Combination

A majority of products aim to give customers both Glucosamine & Chondroitin – combined. However, many problems arise from companies not only combining these ingredients together in the same pill, but also in choosing the wrong ingredients and failing to provide the right dosage. Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplements have been surrounded with a variety of issues all stemming from misinformation. These have also contributed to a variety of both positive and negative studies done on the combination of both ingredients. On the positive side, some research has concluded that both Glucosamine and Chondroitin ingredients can provide support for more advanced joint discomfort and may be beneficial for those that need that extra layer of support. However, a 2010 study examined the pharmacokinetics of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate when taken separately or in combination. It found that Glucosamine was significantly reduced by the combination dose of Chondroitin Sulfate. This provided an interesting dilemma. Both ingredients can have benefits for customers when together but offering them in the same pill can be counterproductive.
